Our Practice this Month is: The Art of Self-Devotion

Our mantra is:

I accept myself for who I am

I am right where I’m meant to be

My self love is who I am

The Art & Frequency of Self-Devotion

Self-devotion is a heart-centred way of living life. It allows us to approach the mystery of change with steadiness, clarity and trust. This practice is about self-love in action — the simple, daily choices that develop and nourish our spiritual awareness.

We have already practised devotion through the focus of our original medicine — exploring how, when we are devoted to the expression of our own unique gift, we are paying attention to what has heart and meaning for us.

This month, we are going to deepen into the art — and frequency — of self-devotion.

The practice of self-devotion steadies us, enabling us to connect deeply with our inner wisdom. This in turn raises our frequency, nourishing our heart and soul, bringing balance to our inner world, restoring our inner strength and fortifying our trust and faith in our inner guidance. Sorrow and joy are the domains of the heart and it is important that we tend both. In this way we align with our mission or deep calling — which inevitably is what makes us feel happy, or true to ourself.

A Story from the Wild

When I shared January’s practice of devotion I was raising two tiny orphaned wallabies (joeys) who both had injuries. One was the size of my hand when he arrived, with injuries that were uncovered and healed over many weeks. They needed round-the-clock care and the most important work for me initially was to help them to feel safe.

A few days ago, after nearly a full year in care, we released them back to the wild — healthy, strong, young adults. This is the moment we aim for. Our work is done — and it is such a moment of joy. But of course, there is the sadness of goodbye.

With the deepest devotion, for the last time, I washed out their bowls that we’d put their oats and nuts in each day. And I cried - because I love them so much and I am so happy they made it. And I miss them. I remembered moments during the precious time we had as kin. The long weeks of recovery for one of them, the delight as they started to find their feet and jump around, when they first started eating their roots and dirt…

To me this is devotion. It is a felt experience. Allowing myself to fully experience these feelings was self-devotion. There is a respect and dignity that comes with it. A loving, nurturing energy. And, according to science, our brains are hard wired for these spiritual experiences that enable a sense of connection to something greater and a belonging to life.

Dr Lisa Miller says “devotion is a sustained practice of connecting with a deeper, spiritual reality through methods like prayer, meditation, and acts of kindness.” As you raise your frequency the greater your sense of belonging becomes. Self-devotion connects us deeply with our own divine spark within.

One of my daily practices of self-devotion is to walk along what I call the shoreline of certainty and uncertainty — usually at sunset. The water’s edge steadies me, folding me into the whole of the place. It clears my mind, anchoring me in the present moment. This is the kind of steadying practice I invite you to find this month. Change is happening to us in every moment. Self-devotion helps us to feel safe, connected and able to be present to change as well as to our personal mission.

Why Self-Devotion Matters

Spiritual awareness and inner guidance are natural capacities that are nourished and cultivated through self-devotion. When we give ourselves time, care, and presence, something shifts. We attune to the frequency of our true nature — the part of us that knows what feels good, meaningful, nourishing for us. This inevitably connects us to our mission, or purpose.

Self-devotion is choosing to treat your inner world with reverence.

It enables you to remember that you are nature.

Dr. Lisa Miller’s research shows, turning inward to your inner guidance actually strengthens your sense of safety, belonging, and connection.

The Practice

Our practice this month has two parts.

Part one
From New moon to Full moon - safety grounding and connection

Creating, rebuilding or maintaining your sense of safety and grounding through simple, daily acts of self-devotion.

Each morning

Connect with your inner world through stillness. Take a few moments - or longer, to be still before rising. Lay quietly and listen to the sounds around you. Focus on your breath if you are distracted.

Then ask yourself:

‘What will help me feel safe today? What will help me to feel grounded and connected to my inner world?’

Trust your inner voice, or guidance

Light a candle and say something positive about your safety and inner connection

( you can also use our mantra ).

Write down one thing that will help you feel safe and grounded.

Place it where it is in the light.

Later in the day or evening come back to it.

Offer thanks for the day and the sense of safety, grounding and connection you are cultivating and release your morning note by reading it to one, or all, of the elements:

To the light ( sun, moon, stars, firelight ) to illuminate it
To the wind ( or fresh air ) to carry it out into the world
To the waters to act as a sacred witness, and add the energy of flow
To the earth to fertilise and nourish it
Say your own words of release.

Part two
From Full Moon to Dark Moon: What Feels Good & True

As the moon begins to wane we are going to shift our self-devotion practice to our dreams and desires. To what makes you feel good and what strengthens your sense of purpose and belonging. To realise our true potential we must continually connect with the source of our inspiration, our heart centre, through self-devotion.

Each night reflect on your current day dreams and what makes you happy. Begin by focusing on your breath. Take slow deep breaths for a few minutes ( unless it is uncomfortable ). Contemplate your sense of purpose or your mission - then be still. Listen to your inner wisdom. What dream do you want to have tonight that will illuminate something you need to know - perhaps it is about your truth, what makes you feel happy, what is blocking you from that feeling, or, perhaps, to better understand your purpose..

Keep your journal beside you so you can write down your dreams in the morning. If you don’t remember them, write down your first thoughts and feelings.

Light a candle and sit with your dreams and reflections.

Then ask “What do I need to perceive or do to further my happiness and the implementation or nourishment of my mission.”

A mission does not have to be complicated. Trust what makes you feel good. It will lead you to where you want to go.

Let your dreaming — night dreaming and day dreaming, and your inner guidance — show you the way. Keep a journal no matter how simple. At the end of the lunar month you can reflect on the journey and see where you have arrived at this time and what your experience of self-devotion has offered you.

In a world that often feels fragmented, self-devotion is an anchoring force. It nourishes our inner landscape, deepens belonging, and brings beauty and vitality into daily life. When you devote time, attention, and love to your own being, you meet the world with greater grace — open to synchronicity, guidance, and the unexpected blessings that arise when you treat yourself as sacred.
